The FAMU-FSU College of Engineering Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering is pleased to welcome Dr. Juyeong Choi to its ranks as an assistant professor in the area of infrastructure sustainability and construction engineering. Choi comes to us from Purdue University, where he received master’s and doctoral degrees in civil engineering, with a focus on construction engineering. He also holds a bachelor’s in architectural engineering from the University of Seoul in South Korea. 

It isn’t uncommon to find individuals in a city striving to make a positive impact. However, what differentiates civil engineer Echo Gates from many is that her ideas are literally changing the landscape of her community and improving the quality of life in Tallahassee.

Recently, engineering dean J. Murray Gibson initiated the Dean’s Engineering Fellows Program, a new graduate funding program from the Dean of Engineering facilitated through the Associate Dean of Research and Graduate Studies. The aim of the initiative is to enhance the quality and number of engineering Ph.D. students at the college.

Clad in white lab coats, three scientists stand at the front of a high school classroom, with a show-and-tell presentation they hope will inspire the next generation of scientists who have a passion for protecting the planet.

“You will change the world Jennifer, I am sure of it,” Florida State University President John Thrasher said to the young junior who quietly stood before him.

Jennifer Magi was at the 2019 FSU Undergraduate Humanitarian of the Year award presentation as an honoree from the FAMU-FSU College of Engineering. President Thrasher recognized fourteen outstanding undergraduates from across FSU at the event. All of the students this year were female.

Recently, Anne Barrett, Director of Florida State University's Claude Pepper Center asked Eren Erman Ozguven, Ph.D., a civil and environmental engineering researcher at FAMU-FSU Engineering to talk about how roadway design affects older drivers. The American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) has announced Garit Poire, E.I., M.S., ENV SP as one of ten 2019 New Faces of Civil Engineering in the Professional category! Poire is a graduate of the Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University – Florida State University (FAMU-FSU) College of Engineering, where he earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in civil engineering. Poire now serves as a Special Project Division Engineering Assistant for Turner Construction Company. Today, Poire calls Orlando, Florida home. 

Dr. Terri Norton has come a long way since earning her doctorate in civil engineering (2005) at the FAMU-FSU College of Engineering.  

On July 1, 2018, Norton begins a new job as the Bucknell University College of Engineering Associate Dean for Students & Strategic Initiatives, a role in which she will support students and promote multiculturalism.

A FAMU-FSU College of Engineering professor recently received a Graduate Assistance in Areas of National Need (GAANN) grant from the Department of Education in the amount of $1.5 million dollars to identify and nurture minority students pursuing a graduate education in engineering. Clayton Clark II, Ph.D., a professor of civil and environmental engineering procured the grant that is partially funded by Florida A&M University. He is the administrator and principal investigator for the award.
