Professor Emeritus Dr. Fred O. Simons, Jr. Remembered for Joint College Contributions

In Memoriam, July 7, 1937 – October 26, 2024

Professor Fred Oliver Simons, Jr. began his academic journey in his birth state at Mississippi State University, earning his Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering in 1960. His drive and determination then took him and his young family to Gainesville, Florida, where he earned his Master of Electrical Engineering from the University of Florida (U. of F.) in 1962 and his Ph.D. in 1965.

RIDER Center Partners in $28.7M Grid Resilience Project

The FAMU-FSU College of Engineering’s Resilient Infrastructure and Disaster Response (RIDER) Center will participate in a $28.7 million federal investment to protect Florida communities against extreme weather events.

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) grant will support the City of Tallahassee Electric & Gas Utility in deploying a utility-scale battery energy storage system (BESS) to strengthen grid resilience and provide backup power to critical facilities.

FAMU-FSU College of Engineering Professor Named to National Academy of Inventors

FAMU-FSU College of Engineering Professor Hui “Helen” Li has been named to the 2024 Class of National Academy of Inventors Fellows.

Li is the FSU Provost McKenzie Professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, and for the past 20 years has led power electronics research at Florida State University’s influential Center for Advanced Power Systems, or CAPS.

College Part of International Health Equivalence and STEM Research Summit in Panama to Foster Global Collaborations

Florida State University’s Center of Population Sciences for Health Equivalence (CPSHE) recently hosted the International Health Equivalence and STEM Research Summit in the Republic of Panama to foster collaborations between researchers, educators and policymakers in Panama and the U.S.

The FAMU-FSU College of Engineering participated in the event to reinforce the engineering pipeline that prepares FSU Panama transfer students for upper-level coursework at the joint college stateside.
