Several FAMU-FSU College of Engineering, Department of Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering (IME) and High-Performance Materials Institute (HPMI) researchers received awards at the SAMPE 2018 Technical Conference and Exhibition in Long Beach, California.

A team of six student engineers, who brainstormed a hands-free umbrella for wheelchairs, won the grand prize of $10,000 in Florida State University’s annual InNOLEvation® Challenge sponsored by the Jim Moran School of Entrepreneurship.
The students, all seniors at the FAMU-FSU College of Engineering, created an umbrella called DriGo that automatically deploys when a person pushes a lever located behind the left elbow.
Claire Kelly, an industrial engineering student, said there’s nothing else like DriGo on the market.
Three teams led by FAMU-FSU College of Engineering faculty members received specialized funding from Florida State University as they work to translate their innovative research into successful commercial products.
The researchers were awarded critical financial support following their successful presentations at FSU’s biannual GAP competition, a panel event organized by the FSU Office of the Vice President for Research where entrants pitched their novel ideas to a committee of state and local businesspeople.
Industrial engineering junior Roberto Barrera believes he was born tailored with an engineering mindset. At 10-years-old, his parents made him responsible for inventory of their food stand back home in Greensboro, FL. Before he started organizing it, setting up their stand took almost two hours. As a child, Barrera was able to help his parents by increasing their efficiency.
“I would always look for the better solution to things or how to innovate a system in my normal life,” Barrera remembers.

Marquese Pollard and Arriana Nwodu, Florida A&M University graduate students at the FAMU-FSU College of Engineering were the first two students from the college to be involved with a new emersion program funded by the National Science Foundation-Research Infrastructure for Science and Engineering (NSF-RISE). The two industrial engineers collaborated with students from the University of Michigan (UM) to gain hands on experience in manufacturing systems.
